MASAKÏ MATSUSHÏMA
Founded in Tokyo in 1992 by Masaki Matsushima (b. 1963, Nagoya), a Bunka Fashion College graduate mentored by Issey Miyake and former chief designer of Tokio Kumagai. Matsushima's work merges Japanese construction precision with Parisian formal elegance; architectural silhouettes, restrained ornamentation, and a constant pursuit of special materials. He designed stage costumes for Ryuichi Sakamoto's BEAUTY TOUR in 1990, debuted at Tokyo Collection in 1992, and showed at Paris Prêt-à-Porter from 1995 S/S (womenswear) and 1996 S/S (menswear).
The brand operated across distinct lines: Masakï Matsushïma Paris (1992, accessories and international ready-to-wear), Masakï Couturier Avenue Montaigne Paris (circa 1994, the highest expression of the label, designed in Paris and produced in Japan), MAISONS Masaki Matsushima homme (late 1990s, domestic Japanese menswear in Japanese sizing). By the early 2000s the focus shifted toward fragrance and eyewear, making the original clothing and leather goods increasingly rare.
